Net 30 payment terms: meaning, due date, EOM and 2/10 Net 30 explained
Net 30 is a payment term that means the full invoice amount is due 30 calendar days after the invoice date. An invoice dated October 21, 2026 on Net 30 terms is due on November 20, 2026. "Net" means the whole amount, with no discount unless the terms say so. Below: how to calculate the due date by hand and in Excel, the difference between Net 30, Net 30 EOM and 2/10 Net 30, other common terms, invoice wording you can copy, when to offer Net 30 to your own customers, and how to keep track of who owes what by when — including in Account Ledger by Ofisx, which records sales on account with a due date and alerts you when they come due.
Short answer
- Net 30 meaning: pay the full invoice amount within 30 calendar days of the invoice date.
- Due date: invoice date + 30 days. Oct 21, 2026 → Nov 20, 2026. Weekends and holidays count unless your terms say otherwise.
- Net 30 EOM: 30 days after the end of the month of the invoice. Any October 2026 invoice → due Nov 30, 2026.
- 2/10 Net 30: take a 2% discount if you pay within 10 days; otherwise the full amount is due in 30 days.
- Net 30 vs due on receipt: due on receipt means pay now; Net 30 gives the customer a month of interest-free credit.
- "Net 30 accounts" in business credit talk are suppliers that sell to you on Net 30 terms and may report your payments to business credit bureaus — a different topic from writing Net 30 on your own invoices.
How to calculate a Net 30 due date
Count 30 calendar days from the invoice date (not the delivery date, unless your terms say "from receipt of goods"). The invoice date is day 0. Examples for invoices dated in 2026:
| Invoice date | Terms | Due date | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 21, 2026 | Net 30 | Fri, Nov 20, 2026 | Oct 21 + 30 days |
| Sep 30, 2026 | Net 30 | Fri, Oct 30, 2026 | Sep 30 + 30 days |
| Feb 15, 2026 | Net 30 | Tue, Mar 17, 2026 | February has 28 days in 2026 |
| Oct 21, 2026 | Net 30 EOM | Mon, Nov 30, 2026 | End of October (Oct 31) + 30 days |
| Oct 21, 2026 | 2/10 Net 30 | Discount until Sat, Oct 31; full amount by Fri, Nov 20 | Invoice date + 10 / + 30 days |
In Excel or Google Sheets, with the invoice date in B2: due date `=B2+30`; Net 30 EOM `=EOMONTH(B2,0)+30`; 2/10 discount deadline `=B2+10`; days past due `=MAX(0,TODAY()-C2)` where C2 is the due date. Format the result cells as dates.
If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, many businesses pay on the next business day, but that is a courtesy, not a rule. If it matters to you, write it in your terms.
Net 30 vs other payment terms
| Term | Meaning | Due date for an Oct 21, 2026 invoice | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Due on receipt | Pay when the invoice arrives | Oct 21, 2026 | New customers, one-off jobs, small amounts |
| Net 7 / Net 10 | Pay within 7 or 10 days | Oct 28 / Oct 31, 2026 | Freelancers, regular weekly suppliers |
| Net 15 | Pay within 15 days | Nov 5, 2026 | Small businesses that want faster cash |
| Net 30 | Pay within 30 days | Nov 20, 2026 | The most common B2B term in the US |
| Net 30 EOM | 30 days after the end of the invoice month | Nov 30, 2026 | Customers who pay in a monthly run |
| 2/10 Net 30 | 2% off if paid in 10 days, else full in 30 | Oct 31 (discount) / Nov 20, 2026 | Suppliers who want to speed up cash |
| Net 45 | Pay within 45 days | Dec 5, 2026 | Larger customers, distributors |
| Net 60 / Net 90 | Pay within 60 or 90 days | Dec 20, 2026 / Jan 19, 2027 | Large retailers and corporations |
Is 2/10 Net 30 worth taking? Paying 20 days early to save 2% is equivalent to an annual rate of about 37% (2/98 × 365/20). If you have the cash, taking the discount is usually a good deal. As a seller, offering it is expensive — use it only when you really need the cash sooner.
How to write Net 30 on an invoice
Put the terms and the actual due date near the total, so nobody has to calculate anything:
- Simple: "Payment terms: Net 30. Due date: November 20, 2026."
- With a discount: "Terms: 2/10 Net 30 — deduct 2% ($48.00) if paid by October 31, 2026; otherwise $2,400.00 is due by November 20, 2026."
- EOM: "Terms: Net 30 EOM. Due date: November 30, 2026."
- With a late fee (only if your agreement allows it): "Payment is due within 30 days of the invoice date. Balances unpaid after the due date are subject to a late fee of [your agreed rate]."
- On a quote or credit application: "Approved accounts are invoiced on Net 30 terms. Orders may be held while any invoice is more than 30 days past due."
Late fee limits and how they must be disclosed differ by state; agree them in writing before the sale and check with your accountant or attorney if you are unsure.
Should you offer Net 30 to your customers?
Offering Net 30 can win business customers who expect it, but you are lending them a month of your money. Before you switch a customer from cash to Net 30:
- Start with a smaller limit. Give new accounts a credit limit (for example $2,000) and raise it after a few on-time payments.
- Get the details in writing. Legal business name, billing contact, address and the agreed terms — a one-page credit application is enough for small accounts.
- Price it in. A 30-day wait costs you financing and the risk of late payment; regular Net 30 customers often pay full list price rather than cash discounts.
- Watch your own cash gap. If your suppliers want payment in 15 days and your customers pay in 30, you are financing the difference.
- Decide the rule for late accounts in advance — for example, new orders are held when an invoice is 15 days past due.
How to track Net 30 invoices
Net 30 only works if you know, every week, which invoices are coming due and which are late. A simple tracking list for a trade supplier looks like this (checked on November 23, 2026):
| Customer | Invoice | Invoice date | Amount | Due (Net 30) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mason Roofing | #1063 | Oct 21, 2026 | $2,400.00 | Nov 20, 2026 | 3 days past due — remind |
| Harbor Café | #1071 | Oct 28, 2026 | $620.00 | Nov 27, 2026 | Due in 4 days |
| Pine Street Deli | #1080 | Nov 4, 2026 | $1,150.00 | Dec 4, 2026 | Not yet due |
| Mason Roofing | #1088 | Nov 10, 2026 | $1,800.00 | Dec 10, 2026 | Not yet due — hold new orders until #1063 is paid? |
Each week: send a payment reminder for anything due in the next few days and anything past due, record payments against the right customer, and look at the total per customer, not just per invoice — Mason Roofing owes $4,200.00 across two invoices. The options in detail
Account Ledger by Ofisx
Account Ledger keeps a ledger per customer — sales on credit with a due date, payments, partial payments and returns — and shows the running balance. Due-date alerts tell you what is coming due or overdue, and from the customer's card you can send their balance by WhatsApp or share the ledger as a PDF statement.
It does not issue invoices with payment terms printed on them, calculate early-payment discounts or take card payments; use your invoicing tool for those and the ledger for who owes what by when.
Intuit QuickBooks
QuickBooks lets you set terms such as Net 30 on customers and invoices and calculates due dates inside full accounting.
Zoho Books
Zoho Books supports standard and custom payment terms on invoices, with reminders and customer statements in full accounting.
Wave
Wave handles invoicing and bookkeeping and can remind customers about overdue Wave invoices.
Spreadsheet
A sheet with the columns above and the formulas in this guide works well for a few accounts. It breaks down when payments are partial, several people update it, or you need each customer's total balance at a glance.
How to make Net 30 terms work
- Write the due date, not just "Net 30" — A printed date removes every "I thought it was from delivery" conversation.
- Agree terms before the first sale — Terms, credit limit and late-fee policy go on the quote or credit application, not on the first overdue reminder.
- Remind before the due date — A friendly note a few days before day 30 catches lost invoices while no one is late.
- Track the balance per customer — Two small open invoices from the same customer can add up to more credit than you meant to give. A client ledger shows the total.
- Hold credit for late accounts — Pausing new orders on account until the oldest invoice is paid is usually the fastest collection step.
- Match your own supplier terms — Keep an eye on what you owe and when in accounts payable, so Net 30 to customers does not leave you short.
Limits — what Account Ledger does not do
- Account Ledger does not print payment terms on invoices or calculate early-payment discounts such as 2/10 Net 30.
- It does not send automatic email reminder sequences or take card payments; you send the WhatsApp reminder from the customer's card.
- In the US the app is on the App Store for iPhone; the Android version is on Google Play in Turkey only for now.
- It is a paid subscription after the free trial; the App Store shows current plans and prices.
Frequently asked questions
What does Net 30 mean?
The full invoice amount must be paid within 30 calendar days of the invoice date. An invoice dated October 21, 2026 on Net 30 is due November 20, 2026.
Does Net 30 include weekends?
Yes. Net 30 counts calendar days, not business days. If the 30th day is a weekend or holiday, many customers pay the next business day, but that is a courtesy unless your terms say so.
Is Net 30 from the invoice date or the delivery date?
From the invoice date unless the terms state otherwise, for example "Net 30 from receipt of goods". Write the exact due date on the invoice to avoid confusion.
What is Net 30 EOM?
Payment is due 30 days after the end of the month in which the invoice is dated. Any invoice dated in October 2026 is due November 30, 2026.
What does 2/10 Net 30 mean?
The customer can deduct 2% if they pay within 10 days of the invoice date; otherwise the full amount is due within 30 days. On a $2,400 invoice that is $48 off for paying 20 days early.
How do I calculate Net 30 in Excel?
With the invoice date in B2, use =B2+30 for the due date, =EOMONTH(B2,0)+30 for Net 30 EOM and =MAX(0,TODAY()-C2) for days past due, where C2 is the due date.
How do I keep track of Net 30 customers?
Keep a list or ledger with each sale on account, its due date and payments received, and check it weekly for anything due soon or overdue. Accounting apps such as QuickBooks, Zoho Books and Wave do this for invoices issued in them; Account Ledger by Ofisx keeps a running-balance ledger per customer with due-date alerts on iPhone, with a free trial and then a subscription.
